Why Do Dogs Pee on Beds?

Why do dogs pee on the bed?

Dogs… they’re man’s best friend, through thick and thin. That’s doesn’t always mean taking care of a dog is going to be easy. Nothing is more frustrating than coming home from work, only to find that your furry best friend decided to relieve themselves right on your bed. Gross.

Maybe it’s happened just once; or, it’s happened a bunch of times. Either way, you have a question you want answered: why do dogs pee on beds?

Marking Their Scent:

Biologically, dogs like to pee on their property. It’s how they mark their scent for other animals to smell and identify. In your dog’s mind, they are simply letting other dogs and pests know that your home is their territory. It’s kind of cute, when you think about it.

Scared or Anxious:

Doggy anxiety is a real condition, and it can cause your dog to relieve themselves in less-than-ideal places. Whether you got the dog from a previously abusive relationship, the dog is inbred, or anything else like that, the canine may become scared from loud noises, inclement weather, and other stimulating factors.

Medical Condition:

Medical conditions like diabetes and urinary tract infections can increase a dog’s requirement to go pee. If you find that your dog is relieving themselves inside the home multiple times per week, you need to take them to the vet to get some answers.

Dogs are creatures of habit, which is why if a peeing habit on your bed commences, you will want to try and shift the behavior immediately. If you catch the dog after just one instance, it should be easy to reintroduce house training.

However, if it’s a habit that was inherited in a past living arrangement, you are going to need to dedicate 4-6 months to really get them used to potty training. See our other potty training blog for details.

Lastly, remember that yelling at your dog for peeing inside will never fix the solution. It will just scare and upset them, possibly causing them to pee inside again. They don’t know they did something wrong.
